

4 Ways to Enhance Inner Peace and Nurture Your Creative Soul
In this fast paced, hustle bustle world it is extremely important to create time to take care of your soul. Even when you are at home our minds can be cluttered with responsibilities, worries, and day to day life. We must be intentional about finding ways to slow down and take some time for calm and inner peace.
Here are 4 ways to create your inner peace and calm.
Choose the one that speaks to you at the time and take a few minutes for yourself.
-Set up a space just for you. Light a candle and breathe. Take 4 deep breathes and slowing exhale as you listen to calming music with your eyes closed. Put together a special play list of calming music or type in calming music to your search engine and see what comes up. It’s important to set up a space for you to cherish yourself with the calming music of your choice. All you need is 10 minutes, and you will be revived.
-Finding secret pockets of time can create inner peace. Maybe you are between errands, and you have a few minutes before you go on to the next thing on your list. Take that small amount of time and daydream, take a walk around the area you are in, or stroll through an art store. Aah and breathe.
-Tap into your creative spirit. When you have a longer segment of time, like 15 minutes, take out just 4 art supplies and a substrate you want to use with your supplies. Then move the materials around on your paper, canvas, or wood. No judgement, only calm movement of your supplies on the substrate of your choice. As an example, my 4 art supplies may be orange acrylic paint, a white gelly roll pen, an image, and a black marker.
I have chosen a piece of watercolor paper as my substrate. I set the timer for 15 minutes and play. I might start with putting some orange acrylic paint on my paper and then I take the image that I have of a sunrise and paste in on my paper. Next, I use my gelly roll pen to make some oval marks and finally I take my black marker and write a quote or a word on my paper. When your timer rings, set your art to the side, and breathe. Ta da that’s it! Limiting your supplies helps you focus and be present with what is right is in front of you. Now you will be able to move through your day with more calm and inner peace.
-Spend time with other creative souls. Whatever your chosen creative practice is, we tend to work in isolation oftentimes. While working independently can be joyful there are times that being with other creatives can be inspiring and bring you inner peace. I love to bring various art supplies to friend’s homes to create together. Or I put out supplies at my home and invite a few friends over to play. Or find an online group whereby you can create together and enjoy casual conversation. We are social animals and it’s important to sustain and foster connections with others.
With inner peace you can deliberately enter a spiritual and psychological state of calm. Inner peace allows you to participate in your life with an open mind and heart. Inner peace calms your mind and allows you to see your path and journey in a clearer way. Inner peace helps you focus and prioritize what is truly important in your life. Inner peace is the path towards happiness. Having inner peace is what will allow you to enjoy and appreciate the present, regardless of whether it’s good or bad. Gaining inner peace requires a change in your mindset. Are you going to have a state of inner peace every second of everyday, of course not; however, when you have a few tools to add to your toolbox you can change things up to create inner peace.
There are many benefits of creating inner peace and these 4 ways are simple, creative methods to foster your inner peace. Listen to your heart and know when it is time to R-E-S-T and fill up your cup of energy. And the nice thing about these 4 ways is that you don’t have to identify as a creative to reap your playful nature and the benefits of this exploration. Whether you are drawn to creative endeavors or just beginning to dabble and play, these 4 ways will bring you inner peace.

- It comes in different shapes, colors, and sensations – water in a dewdrop, a tear, condensation, a single drop of water.
- Water can represent different things – life, intelligence, wisdom, power, softness, winter.
- Through water we can find tranquility and healing – just like your creative pursuits.
- It can never be broken, cut, or destroyed.
- Represents winter, fluidity, and adaptability.
Fire
- Fire is energy that has a life force that undulates and changes.
- Sometimes subtle, sometimes bold.
- Creates an organic environment – movement, line, shape.
- All these entangles create a formal chaos that becomes a cohesive whole
- It can give life as well as take life. It is neither friend nor foe.
- If used properly it can give us food and energy.
- If handled carelessly, it can cause injury and devastation.
- It represents Summer, transformation, and energy.
Earth
- Out in nature, woods, forest, prairie, etc….you can sense presence and connectedness that can make an everlasting impression.
- Fascination with growing things and animals.
- Explore your relationship with nature, paying homage to the healing power of nature.
- Earth expresses the extremes of endurance & patience for the fulfillment of her mission – that is helping humans to survive.
- It represents stability and solidity.
Air
- There can be inspiration in the air/wind. Walk outside in the wind and feel the flow-feel energized by its power.
- It is a source of survival.
- It gives us the idea of vastness and opportunities in life.
- It represents movement, communication, spaciousness, and openness.
Spirit
- This is the element in all things. An essential part of every living being.
- It represents the connection and balance of all the elements coexisting.
- It is a sign of a sense of joy and union.
- It represents the infinity symbol and heart.
All of the elements of nature are interconnected and can easily be used in your creative pursuits. Try this exercise.
- With your sketchbook and a pencil, go outside and walk and/or sit and observe. What do you see, feel, experience. Is it windy, sunny, stormy? What season is it? What colors do you see? How do you feel – are you happy, anxious, sad, spirited? What sounds do you hear? What shapes do you see? No judgements. You can’t get this wrong. Spend 10-15 minutes outside.
- Once inside, take your notes and circle the words that resonate with you.
- Write these words on your substrate. You can use a canvas, mixed media paper, watercolor paper or any type of paper that calls you.
- Is there one or more elements that speak to you right now. Use the colors of that element for your painting. You can use watercolor, acrylic, oil pastels, crayons, colored pencils, anything…
- Bring other shapes, and mark-making into your piece.
There is so much to gain from stepping outside into nature. The inspiration that you receive will bring forth meaningfulness into your life and creativity. Not only is nature healing, but it is also a source of grounding and gives you permission to let go and create.

Here are 6 tips to tap into the power of creativity to quiet your mind and soothe your soul:
1. Find a Creative Hobby that Fully Engages Your Mind
Find a creative hobby that lights you up when you’re immersed in it. Not sure what that may be? Try different creative endeavors that you’re drawn to. If you’re searching, you could try making collage art, cooking, doodling, knitting, or cultivating a garden. What’s important is that whatever it is brings you joy and quiets the chatter of your mind.
2. Set Aside Time to Pursue this Creative Hobby Uninterrupted
Part of the healing factor with creative activities is that they invite you to get immersed in the present moment and the flow of life. I’ve experienced and heard from many of my students that ‘time seems to stop, and the rest of life, including the struggles, fall away during the creative process. You’re both here in the present and inside a creative world all your own.
Creatively cocooning for a certain amount of time can give you a break from outside stimulation and responsibilities and is restorative.
3. Pour Yourself and Your Creative Impulses into a Creative Project
Creative activities can be a healing way to get to know yourself better. There’s information in the colors and patterns you choose for a piece of art or pottery, or the themes you’re drawn to if writing is your creative outlet.
It’s always healing to lean into our authentic selves, and it can even increase our sense of self-love and self-acceptance.
4. Don’t Put Pressure on Yourself to Finish a Creative Project at a Certain Time
Life already puts enough pressure on us. Each day can be filled with tasks, deadlines, and responsibilities. So, it’s healing to allow yourself at least one area of life—like a creative activity—where the pressure to finish at a certain time, or finish at all, is removed.
You might spend many hours on a creative activity one week, and none the next. In a goal-oriented society, it can be a relief to carve out time where the only thing to do is let yourself be creative.
5. Allow a Creative Activity to Evolve
Don’t put any limits on your creativity. Some people who are prolifically talented creatively and spend a lot of time creating never pursue their creativity professionally.
If, and when, you feel called to share your creativity with family or a select group of friends, give your creativity the grace to evolve into something more or something else. What’s healing for you might help others heal.
6. Remember that Healing Often Happens in the Background of a Creative Activity
Healing will happen in the background as you commit to a creative activity. It might be healing your nervous system from an overstimulating outside world while you retreat into a creative activity. Or time spent on a creative activity might give you something else to focus on instead of trying to speed up or force a healing journey around your physical health, relationships, career, or finances.
Sometimes a creative activity will be a cathartic way to process emotions and past traumas. Healing journeys always go at their own pace, yet they tend to go more quickly and easily when we relax into the present moment. Creative activities are empowering because they bring us out of the busyness of the mind and into the present moment.
Even when we find ourselves in seasons, or transitions that compromise our peace of mind, there is often a way we can be creative about how we approach life. Creative activities remind us of this healing power! You were truly born to create.
